Community Services Central Maine

Since 1967, Creative Works has pioneered exceptional Community Services that provide community-based daytime activities for adults with disabilities and autism. What began as a grassroots venture serving just a few people has blossomed into a network of five locations throughout southern and central Maine that now serve over 200 people. Through our many years of growth, our mission remains the same: creating communities of inclusion.

Our two service locations in central Maine – Five County Community Services and Augusta Community Services – are places where people can come together to explore what makes them curious, develop avenues for self-expression and cultivate natural connections. Our locations are shared spaces full of rich resources like art studios, fully-equipped kitchens where delicious meals are prepared jointly, bountiful gardens, technology centers, and exercise rooms.

We offer an array of classes and opportunities for community involvement focused on capturing the unique, wide-ranging interests and goals of individuals supported. Our extensive curriculum is completely customizable: participants tailor a daily or weekly schedule of both on-site and off-site activities with the help of staff.

Each individual can sample from the full array of activities, and individually tailor a daily or weekly schedule of both on-site and off-site activities. New choices are developed frequently, based on participant feedback. If desired classes or community activities aren’t yet offered, we develop them based on interest and we hold quarterly forums where folks have the opportunity to give feedback on services and direct decision-making. For example, we now offer an Outdoor Exploration module for those who want to experience some of the great gifts of outdoor life in Maine—hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and rock wall climbing, to name just a few. For those who wish to give back to their communities, there are many volunteer opportunities, including work at animal shelters, Meals on Wheels, and other meaningful ways to engage. Participants work together and with qualified Direct Support Professionals to form a community of people who are daily pursuing their passions!

Five County Community Services

Believe in the Journey

Located in the heart of Auburn, Five County Community Services (FCCS) has supported adults with physical and intellectual disabilities living in central Maine since 2007. Every participant who walks through our doors finds a sense of place, tools to cultivate skills and the opportunity to build a genuine community.

Our skilled, passionate staff are dedicated to encouraging each participant in making independent choices while also recognizing that teamwork helps people thrive. We offer an extensive selection of classes and activities designed to inspire individual and collective creativity. Participants guide every support they receive and can customize the curriculum to match their interests, desires and goals.

Whether learning how to make glass mosaics in our Studio Arts program, volunteering at a local charity, exploring the great outdoors, or preparing for a performance with other actors in our Drama group, there’s always something for everyone. In addition to our numerous unique courses, many members participate in regional and national Special Olympics events with the support of our staff. From track and field to swimming, basketball to equestrian, we support participants in following their athletic dreams.

At FCCS, we believe in the journey!

Augusta Community Services

Adventure Awaits

Opened in December 2018, our newest location, Augusta Community Services (ACS), is all about adventure. Serving adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in Kennebec County, our skilled, talented staff are dedicated to making exploration accessible to everyone.

ACS offers a range of course choices that enable individuals to forge their own paths with the support of staff who are genuinely dedicated to igniting their passions and meeting their personal goals. Programs are designed to combine community access with skill development: our Studio Arts program, for example, offers a digital photography course where artists capture the natural beauty of Maine on trips to lighthouses and local farms, then turn their photos into sellable art on computers.

Our swiftly growing Culinary Arts and Woodworking programs provide abundant opportunities to pursue individual and group projects. Inspired to help the bat community, participants in our Woodworking program make bat homes for a local wildlife sanctuary while our Culinary Arts program gives back by sharing delicious meals with the greater community.

Our Adventure Specialist, exclusive to ACS and knowledgeable in an array of outdoor activities, supports our participants in accessing their community through hikes, camping, disc golfing, fishing, boating, white-water rafting and much more. Whatever a person’s level of ability, we believe that access to the great outdoors is not only possible, but core to our mission of creating communities of inclusion.

At ACS, there are no such thing as barriers!
